Hiking Theodore Roosevelt National Park

Where is Theodore Roosevelt National Park?

Theodore Roosevelt National Park is located in western North Dakota. The drive from Bismarck is approximately two hours. This large park has three sections, linked by the Little Missouri River. Painted Canyon is about 15 minutes East of the South Unit, off of Interstate 94. The North Unit and South Unit are separated by approximately 70 miles.

Why visit Theodore Roosevelt National Park?

The park offers access to the beautiful North Dakota badlands and the Little Missouri River. It is named in honor of the influence the area had on Theodore Roosevelt, who hunted and ranched in the Little Missouri badlands as a young man.

What should one expect on the trails at Theodore Roosevelt National Park?

The trails in the park are rugged. In places, they are steep and rocky, and they are not always well-marked. Be prepared for rapid changes in weather conditions, and be aware that the trails can become very slick after rainfall. Many of the trails are exposed, so protection from the sun and plenty of water are highly recommended.

For hikers seeking a moderate challenge, we suggest the Big Plateau Loop in the South Unit and the Caprock Coulee Trail in the North Unit, to gauge the difficulty of some of the more advanced trails. As cell phone service is not reliable within the more remote sections of the park, experience navigating with a map and compass is recommended.

Trail descriptions are available here.

Are pets allowed at Theodore Roosevelt National Park?

Pets are allowed on campgrounds, parking areas, road shoulders, etc. but are NOT allowed on the trails within the park. If you're hiking with a dog, try the Maah Daah Hey Trail... Dogs are allowed on the sections that don't run through the park.

Is there camping at Theodore Roosevelt National Park?

Theodore Roosevelt National park has a developed campground (Cottonwood in the South Unit and Juniper in the North, as well as a group horse camp in the South Unit). Backcountry camping options are also available.

See the "Helpful Links" section for additional information on camping, reservations, and permits.

Is there a fee to hike at Theodore Roosevelt National Park?
