Hiking and Camping at Wyalusing State Park - [Wisconsin]


Where is Wyalusing State Park?

Wyalusing State Park is located in southwestern Wisconsin, where the Wisconsin and Mississippi Rivers converge. It is about 2 hours west of Madison and about 20 minutes from Prairie du Chien.

Why visit Wyalusing State Park?

If possible, plan in advance and reserve a campsite on the bluffs, overlooking the Mississippi River. In addition to the spectacular views, the park offers ample opportunities for hiking and biking, a canoe trail, and a boat launch.The park is also a popular spot for picnicking and bird watching and is home to Native American burial mounds. 


What should one expect on the trails at Wyalusing State Park?

Wyalusing State Park hosts over 14 miles of hiking trails. Trail descriptions can be found here.

There are some tremendous views along the Mississippi Ridge Trail, Bluff Trail and Sentinel Ridge Trail. There's also a cave to explore along the Bluff Trail! The Old Immigrant Trail provided close-proximity views of the river. 

If you do choose to hike the Old Immigrant Trail, be aware that vegetation is quite thick in certain areas, and there is some overgrowth on the trail. Hikers should also be prepared for some steep inclines and declines when hiking trails up to the tops of the bluffs or down to the surface of the river.

Other highlights on the trails include rock walls and formations, additional caves to explore, a few small waterfalls, and large meadows and prairies with opportunities for wildlife viewing.

The park is open year-round from 6:00AM until 11:00PM. 


Are pets allowed at Wyalusing State Park?

Pets are generally welcome in Wisconsin State Parks and Wisconsin State Forests, as long as they are attended and kept under control at all times. Pets must be kept on a leash no longer than eight feet. Please remember to properly dispose of any waste created by you our your pet!

Is camping allowed at Wyalusing State Park? 

There are two family campgrounds in Wyalusing State Park, and group camping options are available. Sites in the family campgrounds are currently $15/night, for sites without electricity, and $28/night, for sites with electricity.

Is there a fee to hike at Wyalusing State Park? 

A vehicle admission fee is required at Wyalusing State Park. The daily fee is currently $8 for vehicles with Wisconsin license plates and $11 for vehicles with out-of-state plates. Annual Wisconsin State Parks and Forests vehicle admission stickers can be purchased for $28 or $38, respectively.
