Hiking at Picacho Peak Recreation Area - [Las Cruces, New Mexico]

Where is Picacho Peak Recreation Area located?

Picacho Peak Recreation Area is located just northwest of Las Cruces, New Mexico, about seven miles from downtown.

What should one expect on the trails at Picacho Peak Recreation Area?

Picacho Peak sits just under 5,000 feet of elevation (4,959 feet). It is composed mostly of rhyolite (mostly quartz and feldspar). The recreation area sits on 13,000 acres. Be prepared, as the final 1.5 miles of road approaching the recreation area are unpaved and not particularly smooth. A high-clearance vehicle, while not a necessity, allows for easier access. Due to the location, the opportunity for solitude exists when hiking at Picacho Peak. On my last afternoon trip, I only saw one other hiker on the trails and one person walking a dog near the trailhead.

Over 15 miles of hiking, mountain biking, equestrian, and ATV trails are available within the recreation area. A 1.5-mile hiking-only trail leads to the peak, offering striking views of the Organ Mountains and Mesilla Valley. The trail is not particularly well-marked, but the lack of vegetation makes route finding relatively easy. The trail to the peak is fairly rocky and definitely exposed to the sun, so stable footwear, morning or evening hikes, and plenty of water are recommended. The final ascent is relatively steep, with about 800 feet of elevation gain over the course of the trail. The trail is relatively short, though, and a round-trip can be completed in under two hours.

There are two shaded picnic areas near the trailhead; however, restrooms, drinking water, and trash receptacles are not provided. Please be sure to carry out any items you brought with you and any garbage generated during your visit!

Are pets allowed at Picacho Peak Recreation Area?

Dogs are allowed, but consider the steep, rocky trail, the exposure to sun, and the lack of available water. Be sure to plan ahead if bringing your dog along. Also, the trail is probably better for dogs with some hiking/adventuring experience.

Is camping allowed at Picacho Peak Recreation Area?

Camping is not allowed at Picacho Peak Recreation Area.

Is there a fee to hike at Picacho Peak Recreation Area?

No parking fees, admission fees, nor user fees are charged at Picacho Peak Recreation Area.
