Where is Blue Mound State Park?

Blue Mound State Park is located about 25 miles west of Madison, Wisconsin.

Why visit Blue Mound State Park?

Blue Mound State Park is situated on the highest point in southern Wisconsin, providing scenic views from two observation towers. The park also offers some unique geological features, over 20 miles of hiking/biking/skiing trails, a family campground, hike/bike-in campsites, access to the Military Ridge State Trail, and even a swimming pool! 


What should one expect on the trails at
Blue Mound State Park?

With over 20 miles of trails, there are options for most hikers. Trails are mostly wide, dirt surfaces, winding through hardwood forests. They are well-marked and easy to follow. On certain trails, hikers will need to be prepared for stairs and some steep inclines. Check out the trail descriptions to help build your hiking itinerary.

Highlights of the trails include the observation towers, the opportunity to observe and learn about the geology of the area, and a natural spring. 

The park is open year-round from 6:00AM to 11:00PM.   

Are pets allowed at Blue Mound State Park?

Pets are generally welcome in Wisconsin State Parks and Wisconsin State Forests, as long as they are attended and kept under control at all times. Pets must be kept on a leash no longer than eight feet. Please remember to properly dispose of any waste created by you our your pet!

Is camping allowed at Blue Mound State Park? 

Camping fees at Blue Mound State Park vary based on residency, site type, and season. The park hosts a family campground, with handicap accessible sites available. Hike/Bike-in campsites are available, with access to the Military Ridge State Trail. A rustic accessible cabin is also available for people with disabilities.

Part of the campground is open year-round. Amenities include a picnic table and fire ring at each site, including the cabin. Toilets and water fountains are located conveniently throughout the campgrounds, and a modern flush toilet and shower facility is available in the family campground.

Is there a fee to hike at Blue Mound State Park? 

A vehicle admission fee is required at Blue Mound State Park. The daily fee is currently $8 for vehicles with Wisconsin license plates and $11 for vehicles with out-of-state plates. Annual Wisconsin State Parks and Forests vehicle admission stickers can be purchased for $28 or $38, respectively.
